Demantoid Garnet

New to the Garnet page are these stunning, rich PURPLE Rhodolites from Kenya. Although the stones are not totally clean, -some bubbles and silk are found as inclusions - the stones will produce outstanding gems where the color will mask most, if not all, the inclusions. And, at this introductory price, who can complain? The mine has just recently started work and I am sure better material will be uncovered.
And now, take a look at the new Rhodolite from Tanzania - large, superb pieces, excellent color, no flaws except that they have a little 'silk'

 At long last, we have some more of the Color-Change Garnet from Taita-Taveta in Kenya. This, rather unusual gem, has sparked off a lot of interest. OK, they certainly won't take a prize for beauty, in fact, they are downright ugly in natural light, ranging from a teal color, to a mix of brown and gray with a smattering of green. Really a weird color assortment. But, like the proverbial 'Ugly Duckling" in the children's books, these stones changed to a remarkable pink/red/mauve color under the incandescent light. And they rival anything which came out of Madagascar. To me, they look very similar in color to the Alexandrite crystals found at the Novello claims in Zimbabwe, some forty years ago. In fact, the colors are incredibly similar! Totally clean gems are rare, most have either some bubbles, silk or tiny crystal inclusions. However, I have been very selective with the material, all have been cleaned or preshaped to some extent, and any inclusions should not detract from the finished gem. We receive this material directly from one of the African miners and this is reflected in the prices. Now just 'Google" the rough and you can make a comparison for yourself on the cost!

Tanzanian Spessartite. This Tanzanian material is possibly the best colored Spessartite available today. I still believe the Namibian "Mandarin" Spessartite which is now defunct, was the best for color. The Tanzanian rough exhibits a very bright true 'orange' color. Like the Namibian material, it is not completely clean (but better than the Namibian rough) and does show some inclusions, mainly small bubbles. Because of this, I've rated all the stones as AA.

Demantoid Garnets - These are the Namibian stones, (not the chrome-green Demantoids from Russia) and we are pleased to have some new stock in. The Demantoid shows an incredible brilliance, it has a refractive Index of around 1.88 which is way higher than even a Zircon. One of the rarest of all Garnets, the Namibian stones show a green to
yellow-green color. Usually these gems show some inclusions and the Namibian stones are no exception, clean gems are few and far between.
