purchase.
Some
more of the superb Pink/Red Spinel has also
arrived! And, some are over 5 cts in size. These stones are from the famous
deposit at Mahenga, north of Morogoro, Tanzania. These are stones NOT
to be missed. Tanzania has rapidly become the world leader in Spinels
and these pink/red stones are fetching extremely high prices when cut.
May I suggest you browse the internet on these stones to get some background
knowledge.
Remember that Spinel has a hardness of 8 (which means you should polish
with Diamond), a very high refractive index of 1.71, and, being formed
in the cubic system, you have no need to orientate the stone for the best
color. These stones always produce a superb result when cut. Please check
on our Sapphire plate for tips on polishing Spinels.

It will help you somewhat with the colors and your decisions regarding
purchase.
The Zircon on offer vary
in color from a clear colorless white stone, through to a light yellow
and then down to a pink/maroon/brown color. These last are difficult to
describe color-wise as the stone being dichroi, does show a 'mix' of colors.
Please note that all the Zircons have been heat-treated to obtain these
colors.. A great gem to cut with a very high refractive index.
Our Danburite is coming
to an end and we don't have that much left. Please take note!! The gem
has a hardness of 7 and a refractive index of around 1.63 which is the
same as Topaz. The specific gravity is 3 against Topaz which is 3.5. The
stones are quite similar in color although clean Danburite is fairly rare.
This yellow 'straw' color is also very unusual. Danburite is colored by
Didymium, a rare earth and the is said to fluoresce with a sky-blue color
when irradiated under ultra-violet light.
