Please
note - If you are viewing the website using
a laptop computer, (apart from the Apple laptop), the colors
portrayed are very poor. I have found this to be the norm after checking
numerous lap tops. The older desktop
screens still seem to give the most accurate colors, so, when ordering,
please read the descriptions of the stones.
It will help you somewhat with the colors and your decisions regarding
purchase.
Spinel
remains another elusive gem to obtain. Once again, the mines in Tanzania
have stopped producing
and we haven't had any new rough for the last four months.
Remember that Spinel has a hardness of 8 (which means you should polish
with Diamond), a very high refractive index of 1.71, and, being formed
in the cubic system, you have no need to orientate the stone for the best
color. These stones always produce a superb result when cut. Please check
on our Sapphire plate for tips on polishing Spinels.

It will help you somewhat with the colors and your decisions regarding
purchase.
For
many years we have not been able to find a good source for Iolite. Most
of the material from Zimbabwe and Tanzania, although a good color, was
rather small and heavily included. Recently we managed to get this superb
parcel of Indian Iolite. Not only are the stones of excellent color with
very few inclusions, they have all been roughly cut to show the best color
orientation. And just look at the sizes - this rough will cut a decent
sized gem!
